Prof. Soumitra Dutta
Dean, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University

For Contributions in Teaching and Research.

Prof. Soumitra Dutta received a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1985 from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi followed by Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Soumitra Dutta is currently the Founding Dean of Cornell SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, New York. The college comprises of the three management schools at Cornell. Most recently, Prof. Soumitra has been centrally involved in the development of Cornell Tech, Cornell's new campus in Manhattan. Before this, Prof. Dutta served as the eleventh dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Corness University. He has also served as the Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Business and Technology, founder and academic director of the eLab at INSEAD, a top-ranked graduate business school in Fountainebleau, France. Prior to this, during his 22-year tenure at INSEAD, Prof. Dutta also served as dean of external relations; dean of executive education; and dean of technology and e-learning. Prof. Dutta has been a visiting professor in the Haas School of Business at Berkeley, Oxford Internet Institute at University of Oxford, and Judge School at University of Cambridge in England. He has lived and worked in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, including stints as an engineer with GE in the U.S. and Schlumberger in Japan.

Prof. Dutta is an authority on the impact of new technology on the business world, especially social media and social networking, and on strategies for driving growth and innovation by embracing the digital economy. Prof, Dutta is best known for being the architect (and main editor) of the Global Innovation Index, which now has become the global standard among innovation indices (co-published with Intellectual Property Organization-WIPO). He is also the co-editor and author of another influential reports in technology and innovation-The Global Information Technology Report (co-published with the World Economic Forum). Both reports have been used by several governments around the world in assessing and planning their technology and innovation policies.

Prof. Dutta has published extensively (papers and books) on issues of technology and business, with a particular focus on the potential of the digital technologies for enhancing innovation.

Mr. Sunil Sood
Managing Director & CEO, Vodafone India Limited
B.Tech. (Textile Technology), 1982
For Contributions in Corporate Business Development & Entrepreneurship.

Mr. Sunil Sood received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Textile Technology from IIT Delhi in 1982. He is also alumnus of the IIM C and the Harvard Business School.

Mr. Sood is the Managing Director & CEO of Vodafone India Limited. A contemporary thought leader with sharp business acumen, Mr. Sood started his career in the FMCG industry in various leadership roles across India, Africa and South East Asia, including the role of a CEO of PepsiCo in Bangladesh. He started his telecom journey with Vodafone in the summer of 2000, then Hutch, as Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Delhi. Under Mr. Sood’s steer as MD and CEO, Vodafone hit a record high Revenue Market Share and emerged the most admired telecom brand. Over the years and in various capacities, Mr. Sood contributed to Vodafone India’s revenues growing exponentially from INR 400 crores to over INR 42,000 plus crore and customers growing from 3 million to over 200 million plus.

A strong believer of the adage “Technology for Good’ Mr.Sood is the spearhead of Vodafone’s ‘M-Pesa’ - an innovative mobile wallet proposition that enables financial inclusion. Committed to impacting society positively, Mr. Sood energetically drives structured and sustained CSR initiatives in the areas of education, health, empowerment of women and agriculture through meaningful partnerships.

Mr. Sood’s conviction is that Broadband Connectivity is key to unlock the value of emerging and futuristic technologies like iOT, Analytics and Machine Learning and he actively engages with the Start Up Ecosystem in India.

In addition to his responsibilities at Vodafone, Mr. Sood is also the Chairman of the British Business Group (BBG) Mumbai, the Vice Chairman of Cellular Operators Association of India, a Director on the board of Indus Towers, the world’s largest telecom tower company and a member of several prestigious industry bodies, associations and public policy forums including CII, FICCI and ASSOCHAM. Mr. Sood was also recognized as “Distinguished Alumnus” by IIM C.

Mr. Saurabh Mittal
Founder and Chairman, Mission Holdings
B.Tech. (Electrical Engineering), 1995
For Contributions in Corporate Business Development & Entrepreneurship.

Mr. Saurabh Mittal received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1995 where he graduated as the Best Graduating Student and was awarded the Alok Saxena Memorial award.

He subsequently received his Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School in 1999 where he was elected as George F Baker Scholar (high distinction).

Mr. Saurabh Mittal is the Founder and Chairman of Mission Holdings, his wholly owned strategic holding firm with focus on building strong operating platforms in technology, financial services and media. Mission Holdings is currently the largest shareholder of Incedo Inc (technology services focused data and analytics); BSI Financial (substantial fintech focused on the multi-trillion dollar mortgage industry); and ONE Championship (Asia’s largest sports media company with broadcast to over 1 billion people backed by Temasek and Sequoia). Mission Holdings also has strategic investments in Self Score (an emerging player in credit fin-tech based out of Silicon Valley and backed by Accel Partners) and a variety of other companies spread across geographies and industries.

Prior to Mission Holdings, Mr. Mittal was a senior partner at Noonday, an affiliate of Farallon Capital Management, one of the world's largest hedge funds where he was responsible for large public and private investments in the areas of Financial Services and Technology, Media and Telecom (TMT).

Mr Mittal also co-founded Indiabulls Group, India’s leading financial services and real estate conglomeratein 1999 where he served as Co-Founder &Vice Chairman from inception till 2014.

Mr. Mittal is an active philanthropist and serves as a member of multiple non-profit boards. These include the Alumni Board of Harvard Business School; Parivaar, one of India’s largest residential school for over 2000 children from destitute backgrounds; and Avasara Academy, focused on developing young women leaders.

Dr. Kiran Bedi
Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry
Ph.D. (Humanities & Social Sciences), 1993
For Contributions in Public Service and Policy.

Dr. Kiran Bedi received her Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Department of Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1993.

Dr. Bedi joined the Indian Police Service in 1972. She is the first woman to join the Indian Police Service (IPS). She won the President's Police Medal in 1979. Her tenure as Police officer is noted for her successful crusade against the crimes against women, campaign against drug abuse and alcohol consumption. She is also remembered for a firm and very efficient traffic management in her capacity as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) during the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi and the 1983 CHOGM meet in Goa. In May 1993, she was posted to the Delhi Prisons as Inspector General (IG) where she introduced several reforms at Tihar Jail, which gained worldwide acclaim. In 2003, Dr. Bedi became the first woman to be appointed the United Nations civilian police adviser. Before her retirement from the police service in 2007, she served as the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development. At present Dr. Kiran Bedi is the Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry.

Dr. Bedi is particularly know for her work in the field of prison reforms. During her stint as IG (Prisons), Dr. Bedi introduced several impactful reforms. Separate barracks were arranged for the hardened criminals, who are engaged in illegal activities even from the Prison premises. For other prisoners, vocational training was arranged with certificates, so that they could find a job after their release. Centers of Indira Gandhi National Open University and National Open School were set up inside the prison. Legal cells were set up to help the under trials, smoking was banned in the prison and yoga and Vipassana meditation classes were introduced to change the prisoners' attitudes. A de-addiction center was established, a bank was opened and a bakery and small manufacturing units, including carpentry and weaving units, were set up in the jail. The profits from the products sold were put into the prisoners' welfare fund. Dr. Bedi developed a panchayat system, where prisoners who were respected for their age, education, or character represented other inmates and met every evening with senior officers to sort out problems. Dr. Bedi founded Navjyoti India Foundation in the year 1988 and India Vision Foundation in 1994. The former was founded with the idea of promoting welfare policing and the latter was set up to work in the field of prison reforms, crime prevention, education, rural development.

Dr. Bedi's reform programme at Tihar received worldwide acclaim. In 1994, Bedi was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Nehru Fellowship. The Magsaysay Foundation recognized her leadership and innovations in crime control, drug rehabilitation, and humane prison reform. Amongst the many other awards conferred upon her are L'OREAL Paris FEMINA WOMEN's AWARDS, 2014 for SOCIAL IMPACT, Nomura Cares Award, Singapore (11th June 2013 ), Certificate of Recognition, Los Angeles, State of California, UN medal 2004, Morrison Tom Gitchoff Award, 2001, Asia Region Award for Drug Prevention and Control, 1991, President’s Gallantry Award, 1979.
