IITD pays tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former PM Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversary

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary on 02 October 2019. The institute also paid tributes to former PM Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary.

The celebrations witnessed felicitation of 19 sanitation workers at the institute. IIT Delhi’s Director Prof V. Ramgopal Rao honored them for their services.

The campus residents sang Bhajans and Sadbhavana Geet to mark the occasion.

A fancy dress competition - 'The Bapu in Me’ was organised in which IIT Delhi community members, dressed up as Mahatma Gandhi, participated and spoke one line from the Gandhi ji’s life that connect with them.

On this occasion, a few major decisions taken by the institute were announced by the Director:

  • Gramodaya Parisar at IIT Delhi has been renamed as "Mahatma Gandhi Gramodaya Parisar".
    The Center for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT) at IIT Delhi is doing pioneering work on issues related to rural development. Over 200 Ph.D. students in CRDT at IIT Delhi and across the institute are working on Rural Technology problems.
  • IIT Delhi is formulating policies for "Institute Social Responsibility" and it plans to consolidate all the society outreach activities through this. Recently created an Associate Dean position has been created for Outreach activities. The institute plan to do more in this direction beyond what it is already doing.

To mark the occasion, Raised Lines Foundation, a non-profit IIT Delhi incubated startup working on developing affordable tactile graphics for persons with visual impairment, launched three bilingual tactile books (Hindi + English, Print + Braille) including one on Mahatma Gandhi’s life titled Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi – राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी.
