Indo-Iran workshop begins at IIT Delhi

A three-day Indo-Iran workshop aimed at bolstering research and academic collaboration between the two countries was organized at IIT Delhi from August 16.

The workshop on ‘Increasing Impact of Research: Strategies to develop cooperation in Science and Technology between Iranian universities and IITs’ was held with the collaboration of Research Counsellor of the Embassy of I.R. Iran in India with the objective to bring together the scientists, researchers, academia and other scholars from the universities in Iran and IITs. The broader aim of the workshop was to increase the research impact and achieve the concrete outcome, generate new ideas and share practical experiences.

Around 15 Iranian delegates and as many representatives from five IITs participated in the workshop.

Addressing the delegates and the representatives at the inaugural function, institute director Prof. V Ramgopal Rao said that IIT Delhi was looking at multiple things from the collaboration. “We are expecting the collaboration to bring about more cultural diversity on the campus. Besides, we can identify some areas and create a mechanism for faculty members to carry out a joint Ph.D. programme. This should also help more student exchanges between the two countries.”

“The major benefits we can look at are enhanced research collaboration with professors from Iran, which in turn will help us get some good Iranian students for our Ph.D. programme,” Dean Alumni Affairs and International Relations Prof Sanjeev Sanghi said.

The sessions during the workshop include Information and Communication Technology, Life Science and Bio Technology, Mechanics and Materials, Energy and Petroleum, Water and Hydrology, Science and Heritage.

The workshop is a follow up of the visit of directors and dean of Alumni Affairs of four IITs to six reputed universities of technology to Iran in 2016.
