Industry Day at IIT Delhi

The first Industry Day of IIT Delhi on Saturday brought together industry, academia and research on a common platform to chart a roadmap for robust industry- academia collaboration and build a healthy ecosystem for a stronger partnership.

More than 250 delegates participated in the one-day event that saw experts deliberating on five thematic areas—Defence, Environment, Affordable Healthcare, Smart Cities and Energy.

Delivering his welcome address IITD director Prof V Ramgopal Rao said this would be a regular event in the institute calendar. “Earlier there was a specific role for academia in the industry. Things have changed now. Research has become an important component of industry. Academia is now also expected to develop products.”

Maintaining that institutions were like ‘idea factories’, he said: “Our job is to bring unlike minds together, create job and the right atmosphere.”

Elucidating on the benefits of having an Industry Day he said: “This will enhance IITD visibility into industrial problem, generate new IITD-industry collaboration and showcase the existing relationship.

Prof Rao underlined the various ways in which the industry can engage with IITD including consultancy and sponsored projects.

Giving his keynote speech Dr. V. K. Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog shared the benefits of industry-academia collaborations.” The industry has graduated over the years and is today capable of solving advanced problems. Innovation and R&D is the need of the hour.”

Stressing on the need to do a real innovation that percolates societal benefits, he said: "Collaboration has to be a continuous process. The academic institutions should understand what is needed by industry and vice-versa. Setting up research parks are good examples but these will not be adequate unless there is a migration of people."

Dr Saraswat advocated on the need to set up a Value Creative Centre in all institutes for strengthening the industry-academia collaboration.

More than 25 hands-on product demonstrations and over 250 posters to showcase industry focused work were exhibited at the event providing valuable industry insight for delegates.
