Institute Lecture: "Water Ushers Prosperity”

A book titled “Story of Water- Water: The Essence of Life” co-authored by Prof O.N. Bhargava, Panjab University; Dr B.P. Singh, Panjab University and Mr Arun Singhal, Writer & Chief Editor, DEW Journal was launched by Prof V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi and Dr Rajendra Singh, winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award and popularly known as "Waterman of India".

In the book, launched on 16 May 2019, the authors have briefly explained the different aspects of water. The likely impact of Global Warming on water resources and the impending water crisis are also discussed in the book. An exclusive chapter deals with heavy water and newly discovered water tunneling and water in space. It is an elementary book meant for school children and laymen.

Speaking on the occasion of book launch, Prof Rao emphasized on the need to conserve water.

The book launch was followed by an institute lecture by Prof. Bhargava on the topic "Water Ushers Prosperity” in which he highlighted the importance of water conservation, “Water is the most important ingredient of life, yet there is lack of appreciation of this aspect. Water covers most of the surface of the earth, but only 3% of that is available on the Earth as fresh water, mostly in the form of ice. Of this less than 1% accessible for human use. In other words, only 0.007% of the total water on earth is potable”.

Dr Rajendra Singh, a well-known water conservationist & environmentalist from Alwar district in Rajasthan, was Guest of Honour on this occasion who while sharing his experience with the audience said that the language of water is the language of our heart and soul.

Starting from a single village in 1985, over the years Dr Rajendra Singh’s NGO Tarun Bharat Sangh (TBS) has helped build over 8,600 johads and other water conservation structures to collect rainwater for the dry seasons., has brought water back to over 1,000 villages and revived five rivers in Rajasthan, Arvari, Ruparel, Sarsa, Bhagani and Jahajwali.
